2009-2011 saw an average of 2 months out of the year on generator power. The Generac ran 16 hours a day through that. The October snow storm in 2011 had us without power til Dec 1.
Since 2002, our utility company laid off 80% of the line crew and response time went from hours to weeks after a state-wide storm event. It's got a couple thousand hours on it now, having been run for weeks at a time with several major outages and storms in the past five year. The generator replaces my old Generac 7000 EXL, which ran in this structure for over ten years. It starts up again and will run with diminishing smoke. The knocking and clanking sounds it makes when this happens gives the impression of a catastrophic engine failure. The load comes on and after a minute or two, it's like the rings just give way and flood the cylinders with oil, killing the ignition. Symptom is extreme oil burning under load. Something seems to be seriously wrong with my new Northstar 13000 generator from Northern Tool.
